Comments

HDL-cholesterol is affected by smoking, exercise, hormones,
sex and age. Factors contributing to decreased HDL-C: genetic, obesity,
smoking, hypertriglyceridemia, lack of exercise, steroids, beta-adrenergic
blockers.

Turn-Around-Time

One day

Intended Use

 A protective
substance utilized for prediction of coronary arterial disease, especially
useful in individuals with high serum cholesterol levels. Low HDLC is an
important predictor of risk of coronary atherosclerosis and coronary heart
disease. HDL may act as a protective scavenger molecule (reverse
cholesterol transport). The liver is the major site of cholesterol
excretion.

Limitations

Abnormal liver function affects lipid metabolism, making HDL
& LDL results of limited diagnostic value. Measuring range: 3.09-150
mg/dL.

Patient Preparation

Patient should be on a normal diet and maintain a stable
weight for a week prior to testing. Any drugs should be discontinued for
3-4 weeks (with physician’s approval). Test should not be done until 3
months after a myocardial infarction. Patient should be fasting for 12-14
hours prior to collection

(Fasting is not important for cholesterol analysis but for
determining other lipids, eg triglycerides when testing lipids
profile).

Reasons for Rejection

Specimen with greatly elevated triglycerides (>400 mg/dL);
improper specimen labeling

Adult Reference Ranges

Desirable – Male: >40 mg/dl

                    Female: >50 mg/dl
